As a multicultural country, Australia is home to many women who are likely to have been subjected to FGM/C as children in their home country. We can say this based on FGM/C statistics that have been collected in some of the countries where women have come from. However, in Australia we have no way of really knowing how many women might be affected.
There is no evidence to suggest that immigrant communities are continuing to perform and encourage FGM/C in Australia. However, there have been a number of isolated cases related to FGM/C in the last few years.
It is important to ensure that new immigrants have the same opportunities to learn about the health risks and laws about FGM/C in Australia.
